BARC2

a Benchmark on the Aerodynamics of a Rectangular 5:1 Cylinder

BARC AIMS

  • to deeply investigate one specific problem in bluff body aerodynamics;
  • to collect contributions coming from as many researchers as possible worldwide and from different disciplinary fields;
  • to assess the consistency of wind tunnel measurements carried out in different facilities;
  • to assess the consistency of computational results obtained through different approaches;
  • to compare experimental and computational results;
  • to develop integrated procedures relying on both experimental and computational outcomes;
  • to develop Best Practices for experiments and computations.

BARC LAYOUT

BARC
  • includes a main setup, intended as a starting point common to every study, and to both wind tunnel tests and computational simulations
  • suggests some sensitivity analyses
  • opens to and encourages variations on the setup autonomously proposed by participating researchers
The detailed setup information and output data requests are reported in the documents
“Requests for Wind Tunnel Tests”
“Requests for Computational Simulations”
available for download in the  DOCS section
Setup information and output data are classified as “required” and “encouraged”.
Any further data can be provided by the participants.
In particular, the major requirements for the main setup common for both wind tunnel tests and computational simulations are:
  • Reynolds number: 2×104 ≤ Re = U D/ν ≤ 8×104
  • angle of incidence: α = 0°
  • turbulence intensity: Iu ≤ 0.01
  • spanwise length of the obstacle: L/D ≥ 15 for wind tunnel tests and L/D ≥ 3 for 3D numerical simulations
  • radius of curvature of the model edges: R/D ≤ 0.025
  • sampling frequency: fsam  D/U ≥ 8 StD
Suggested sensitivity analyses common for both wind tunnel tests and computational simulations include:
  • angle of incidence: α = 2°, 4°, 6°
  • Reynolds number: Re = 3×103, 1×104, 1×105, 5×105, 1×106
  • turbulence intensity: Iu = 0.02, 0.05, 0.10
  • Radius of curvature of the edges: R/D = 0.01, 0.025, 0.05
